Background of the Study
Yoruba folk narratives have long been a cultural cornerstone in Nigeria, serving not only as a medium of entertainment but also as a dynamic agent in the evolution of phonological features within rural communities. These oral traditions transmit indigenous knowledge, values, and linguistic innovations that shape the sound systems of everyday language (Adebayo, 2023). The rhythmic patterns, intonations, and recurring narrative formulas inherent in these folk narratives contribute to distinct phonetic variations and prosodic structures among speakers. Researchers have noted that the interplay between traditional storytelling and language use reinforces cultural identity and phonological distinctiveness (Babatunde, 2024). Rural communities, where these narratives are most prevalent, provide a fertile ground for examining how repeated oral performances foster subtle shifts in pronunciation, intonation, and speech rhythm. This study examines how such narratives influence phonological development, reflecting broader socio-cultural dynamics and intergenerational transmission of linguistic traits (Ogunleye, 2025). By analyzing recordings of traditional storytellers and comparing them with everyday speech, the study aims to illuminate the role of folk narratives in phonological change. Furthermore, it addresses the paucity of research on the interrelation between folklore and phonetics in indigenous languages, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary inquiry into oral tradition, cultural retention, and linguistic innovation.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural significance of Yoruba folk narratives, there remains a dearth of systematic research on their impact on phonological patterns in rural Nigerian communities. Existing studies tend to focus on the literary and cultural dimensions of these narratives, while the phonological consequences are often underexplored (Afolabi, 2023). This gap in literature has led to a limited understanding of how oral traditions contribute to speech variability and language evolution. The lack of comprehensive empirical data on narrative-induced phonological change impedes efforts to document and preserve indigenous linguistic practices. Moreover, without recognizing the influence of folk narratives on everyday speech, language planning and educational strategies may overlook critical aspects of phonological diversity (Okoro, 2024). Thus, this study aims to bridge the gap by providing an in-depth analysis of the phonetic and prosodic alterations associated with oral traditions, thereby advancing our understanding of language evolution in culturally rich environments (Emeka, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the phonological features emerging from Yoruba folk narratives.
  2. To examine the role of oral tradition in shaping speech patterns in rural communities.
  3. To document intergenerational phonological variations influenced by narrative performance.

Research Questions

  1. How do Yoruba folk narratives influence phonological variations in rural speech?
  2. What specific phonetic elements are reinforced through oral storytelling?
  3. In what ways does intergenerational transmission affect narrative-induced phonological changes?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it bridges folklore and linguistics by revealing how Yoruba oral traditions actively shape phonological features in Nigerian rural communities. The findings will enhance academic understanding of language evolution, offer insights for cultural preservation, and inform language policy. By documenting indigenous phonetic practices, the study supports broader efforts to sustain linguistic diversity and empower local communities through educational and cultural programs (Adebayo, 2023; Ogunleye, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the topic only, focusing exclusively on Yoruba folk narratives and their impact on phonology within rural Nigerian communities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Yoruba Folk Narratives: Traditional oral stories and legends passed down through generations that encapsulate cultural values and historical experiences.
  • Phonology: The study of sound systems and patterns in a language.
  • Oral Traditions: The practice of transmitting cultural knowledge and linguistic forms through spoken word rather than written texts.
